The official statement

The heads of the Five Eyes cyber security agencies have issued a joint statement warning that artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming the cyber risk landscape, with frontier AI models set to reshape both attack and defence in months rather than years. While AI offers defenders powerful new tools, the agencies cautioned that it is also accelerating the speed and sophistication of attacks and shrinking the window between when a vulnerability is found and when it is exploited.

The officials argued that cyber risk can no longer be treated as a purely technical matter, calling it a core business risk and a leadership responsibility. They urged boards and executives to ensure resilience holds up under real pressure, and pointed to several urgent steps: reducing the attack surface, accelerating patching, addressing legacy systems, strengthening identity and access controls, and preparing incident response plans in advance.

The agencies were explicit that defenders must integrate AI into their security operations to keep pace with adversaries who are already using it to move faster. Used this way, they said, AI can detect vulnerabilities earlier, improve software quality, monitor unusual behaviour, and speed up incident response.

Anthropic's expansion

Just a week ago, I wrote that this theater, the Fable and Mythos ban, designed to help Anthropic expand into the cybersecurity market. And, voilà, only a week later, intelligence services from five major countries (Five Eyes) are openly PUSHING companies to embed “AI” into their systems.

What concerns me is that we have already heard this story many times. “AI transforming ecommerce”, “AI transforming browsing”, “AI transforming communication”, “AGI is around the corner”, and so on. Classic marketing theater.

Now it is “transforming cyber security”, okay…

But what about officials?

Do the officials calling for “AI” (in truth, stochastic large language models trained on questionable data) inside crucial enterprise systems really know how it works? Do they see what might follow?

Do they fully understand the scale of hallucinations, non-determinism, adversarial manipulation, data leakage, false confidence, and weak reasoning involved? And I am not even referring to the enormous token costs of these “super genius models,” tailored for enterprise use…

So...

I think many enterprises now feel they HAVE to embed “AI” into their pipelines. What happens next?

  1. Stakeholders are less afraid of the “adapt or be left behind” narrative.
  2. C-level, VPs, directors, and managers happily report that their departments fully use AI and that it bears fruit.
  3. Employees burn tokens out of curiosity, from a need to look “contemporary”, and in an effort to satisfy their bosses.

Everyone looks happy!

However, in the end, taxpayers and customers are paying for this theater.

That is world-class creative marketing. Bravo to the Anthropic team. 🫶
