Realistic take on AI regulation

Regulate what? Regulate why? Regulate how? Folks aggressively pushing for AI regulation seriously think that it is a good idea to grant power to control the industry to some guys in expensive suits who will dig their claws into a trillion-dollar market under the noble banner of public oversight for the sake of humanity.

Sure, what can go wrong, that’s a great idea to let the “regulation” set up legal walls for entry and compliance, control the competition, and result in a backroom slugfest between the biggest monopolies. Just to clarify, I like the idea of AI regulation in vacuum, but in practice will it have anything to do with actually helping people or advancing the real tech, or will it be entirely about who pulls the strings and carves up the market? My experience tells me that we shouldn’t be so optimistic. In the end, taxpayers and everyday customers are the ones paying for this expensive theater.

And what is the panic even about? AI? AGI? Or actually LLMs, chatbots? Interesting, you never hear a peep about industrial predictive maintenance (PdM), computer vision (CV), advanced process control (APC), energy management (EMS), or other ML/DL stuff that’s actually driving the world forward. Nope, it’s all about GPT transformers. Because the public were convinced that AI = LLM, and they’re scared out of their minds just because “it talks,” panicking over Hugging Face, rogue viruses, doomsday threats, and the rest of the media script.

As someone actually building with ML, DL, fine-tuning, RAG, and custom MCPs, I know how limited these stochastic token predictors actually are. In PRACTICE. In the REAL WORLD. Not on these artificial semi-independent benchmarks. And calling language models an existential threat to humanity is pure clown shoes. The irony is that these pro-regulation activists are basically backing the same performance from the opposite side, keeping the whole circus alive and adding fuel to the fire.

However, OpenAI is preparing for an IPO, Anthropic is at $1T already. Just think about these numbers. Without sudden government intervention and “regulation”, how do they explain to investors where “AGI” is, ROI, and any promised “intelligence” at all? 😂

P.S. The scariest part of this circus is that people are talking about AI like it’s a superpower by default, treating it like a proven and undeniable fact. It feels like their critical thinking has _completely given up, and they’ve just fully accepted and embraced this narrative. Now they are shifting the debate from questioning [what] and [who] to [why] and [how]. And that is the real issue.
