In a prosperous kingdom, an emperor who cares only about himself is approached by 2 swindlers (guess who?) claiming they can weave a magnificent fabric with a _magical_ property: it is invisible to anyone who is STUPID or UNFIT for their position. The emperor pays them handsomely, and the con men set up looms and pretend to work, while actually producing nothing at all.
When the emperor sends his officials to check on the progress, none of them can see any cloth – but FEARING they’ll be exposed as fools or incompetents, they all praise the invisible fabric. The emperor himself sees nothing but plays along for the same reason. He parades through the town wearing his “new clothes,” and the townspeople, equally AFRAID of appearing stupid, cheer and compliment the outfit.
Finally, a small child cries out, “But he isn’t wearing anything at all!” The truth spreads through the crowd. The king shivered, realizing the truth, but he held his head high and continued the procession, for he was too proud to admit he had been fooled.
