App Store 2026 stats: AI apps flood & churn rate

Vibecoders! Before you rush to code another unique and groundbreaking personal AI assistant, voice note app or habit tracker, just look at the data. The total number of apps in the App Store remains flat, while the number of new app submissions is experiencing a massive spike.

An 84% surge in submissions with only ~2-3% growth in downloads means the App Store is being flooded with low-quality, AI-generated junk that nobody asked for and nobody downloads. The store wipes out all this trash.

I analyzed the recent statistics. Here is my take.

The 2025–2026 "AI App Flood" (unprecedented surge)

  • A 3× Volume Spike: For nearly six years (2019–2024), new iOS app releases held remarkably steady at ~30,000–40,000 per month.
  • In early 2026, the volume suddenly explodes past 105,000+ new apps per month.

This reflects the massive wave of generative AI coding tools, vibe coding, and AI app builders (e.g., Cursor, Claude, v0, Bolt), allowing developers and non-developers alike to build and ship apps to the App Store in a fraction of the traditional time.

High churn: inflow vs. total app store catalog

  • At >100,000 releases per month, developers are launching over 1.2 million new apps per year.
  • Yet, looking at the total available apps in the App Store (Chart 1), the total inventory only grew from ~2.2M to ~2.6M between 2022 and late 2025.

For the total catalog to remain so stable despite over a million new apps entering each year, Apple must be aggressively purging or delisting hundreds of thousands of abandoned, outdated, or low-quality apps.

The bizarre 2019 whip-saw anomaly

  • July 2019: Releases plummeted to an all-time low of under 8,000 apps.
  • September 2019: Just two months later, releases spiked vertically to nearly 100,000 apps, before crashing right back down to ~40,000 by November.

A 12× swing in 60 days points to either a severe data ingestion/tracking glitch by 42matters or a massive backlog clearing ahead of the iOS 13 release and Apple’s updated App Store review requirements that fall.

Why the Huge Spike in Monthly Releases (~100k–115k/mo)?

I think that new app submissions doubled in 2026 compared to prior years due to:

  1. The rise of “Vibe Coding” & AI tools: Generative AI tools (e.g., Cursor, Claude, LLM code generators, no-code/low-code builders) drastically lowered the technical barrier to building iOS software. Apps that once took months to build can now be scaffolded and submitted in hours or days.
  2. Proliferation of niche & wrapper apps: Solo creators and small teams began flooding the store with specialized micro-apps, single-purpose utilities, and AI wrappers.

Why does the total number of active apps stay flat (~2.5M)?

While more than 1.2 million new apps are launched per year, the overall catalog remains stable around 2.5 million apps because the outflow (app removals) balances out the inflow:

  1. Apple’s routine app store cleanups & purges: under the App Store Improvements initiative, Apple continuously delists apps that have not been updated in years, fail to adopt recent iOS SDK requirements, or no longer function properly on modern devices.
  2. High abandonment rate of AI apps: many quickly generated AI micro-apps are short-lived experiments. If an app fails to gain traction, developers frequently abandon it rather than maintain compatibility across major iOS updates.
  3. Apple developer program expirations: publishing on iOS requires an active $99/year Apple Developer account. Hobbyists and experimenters who create several apps but fail to monetize often do not renew their accounts, causing all their associated apps to be automatically delisted.
  4. Stagnant consumer demand: analysis from 9to5Mac notes that while new app releases surged dramatically, total consumer downloads only grew by ~2%. With user attention concentrated on established staples, the majority of new releases see near-zero downloads and quickly fall out of maintenance.

Conclusion

The store is experiencing unprecedented turnover (churn): apps are entering at record-breaking speeds because of vibe coding and AI assisted engineering, but low quality AI apps are being delisted at an equally rapid pace, keeping the net size of the catalog relatively constant.

P.S. Google Play doesn’t see such spikes because everyone’s chasing those Apple users after Claude told them that’s where the cash lives 😉
